According to a new study, exercise is a key weapon in the battle against cancer and other associated comorbidities. The study conducted by researchers from Edith Cowan University revealed that exercise stimulates muscles to secrete a protein called myokines. This myokine, in turn, can suppress tumor growth and help in fighting against cancerous cells.
In this study, obese patients with prostate cancer underwent regular exercise training for twelve weeks. During the study duration, blood samples were collected regularly before and after the exercise regime, and the blood samples collected from the patients were then applied to the living prostate cancer cell culture.
The study results showed a significant difference in the suppression of prostate cancer cell growth when pre-exercise blood and post-exercise blood were applied to them. They found that the post-exercise blood signaled the cancer cells to grow at a slower pace, while in some cases, it completely stopped cell division.
